Wanna Buy A Record Shop?

SISTER RAY, THE legendary Soho indie record shop, is to close unless a buyer is found in the next week or so.

The shop has been trading in Berwick Street for nearly 20 years and recently moved to larger premises – the former Selectadisc store – further up the street. Just last year the store won Music Week’s Independent Record Shop Of The Year award.

Beyond its role as a valued indie stockist – a reputation established when “indie” generally meant “hard to find” – it has hosted sweaty in-store shows (White Denim and Lily Allen being two of the latest), and had recently branched out into specialist vinyl pressings of albums by The Sex Pistols, Damned and Billy Nicholls.

Owners Neil Brown and Phil Barton are keen to stress that the shop is still trading and the administrators are seeking interested parties in order to secure the future of the business.

Are you/were you a Sister Ray habitué? Tell us about your most treasured purchase below. And if you’re an eccentric millionaire with some spare change to spend on a venerable retail outfit, you may wish to contact the administrators’ agents, Edward Symmons LLP, on 020 7955 8454.

  • The first album I ever bought there was Felt’s Me And A Monkey On The Moon. "You get this, too,” said the guy, handing over a free flexidisc of Get Out Of My Mirror. "Only in Soho!" I thought, until my mate told me he'd got a free flexi too... in Woolies.

Best or most loved? Strapping Fieldhands’ Gobs On The Midway: Singles 91 - 95 (Siltbreeze, 1996). Worth it for Eggs In The Reservoir alone. We salute you, Sister Ray!

  • Up, The Perfect Disaster. The perfect record. And a pretty good shop – if you didn’t accidentally walk into a prossie’s front room by accident. Accident? – ha!

“What was a 'record shop', daddy?” That's what our kids will ask us.

  • First it was Reckless (my own favorite in Berwick St) which closed. Now it's Sister Ray. Have been coming to London for the past 15 years and I used to dedicate at least 1 whole day in these shops. I also hoped one day I would go shopping at Berwick with my 2 years old daughter. Probably daydreaming. It's a pity.

  • Best of many albums I bought at Sister Ray was Alec Empire's mash-up album "Alec Empire vs. Elvis Presley" which I had read about in NME thinking that because it was a bootleg I would never get hold of a copy.
A few weeks later whilst walking down Berwick Street I glanced in the window of Sister Ray and OH MY GOD!!! there was said Empire album. Eight pounds later it was mine!!!!!
