ADMIRERS OF PREFAB SPROUT and their singer/ songwriter Paddy McAloon - a soulful romantic with the emotional range of Bacharach and the melodic precision of Steely Dan - are by necessity a patient bunch. They have, after all, only heard two new albums since 1990, excepting Paddy’s superlative, mostly instrumental 2003 set I Trawl The Megahertz.
But that wait for new music will soon be at an end, as MOJO can joyfully report that Paddy and his bass-playing brother Martin have been back in the studio to record the long-awaited follow-up to 2001’s The Gunman And Other Stories. Tentatively entitled Let's Change the World With Music - The Blueprint, it will include the songs Let There Be Music, God Watch Over You and The Last Of The Great Romantics, and a source tells MOJO that they are “some of the best songs Paddy has written!” The band are aiming at a February 2009 release.

Sorry, but this seems to be a hoax that's been going around in one form or other for the past, uhm, 17 years? Well, at least since I Trawl the Megahertz. So please, reveal your source and some specifics, like: Which record label is involved in this?
Much as I hope that this news item is true, I'm afraid I don't believe a word.

If 'Let's Change the World With Music' is indeed released, we'll be talking about the 'new' Prefab Sprout album being nearly 15 years old. He's a fast worker, that Paddy. We McAloon fans are not an optimistic bunch, and I for one will not be smiling until I have something tangible, like a CD perhaps, in the palm of my hands.

I'm afraid I agree. Until it's playing on my stereo, I don't believe this. Even if it's true, Paddy seems to be such the perfectionist in the studio, it could take years before he decides on 10 tunes to place on this potential disc. And what has he or the band really done that was significant since "Jordan"? Don't get me wrong... I'm a HUGE Sprouts fan... but what was with all the sappy songs on "Andromeda" (and how many of them had that eerie keyboard lurking from the "X-Files" themesong?) And then "Horseman"? Hello, were there three songs worth their weight in dung on that one? And let's not even talk about the "solo" CD -- which my family actually asked me never to play outloud if they were home. According to BMI's Repertoire, Paddy has registered a staggering 81 UNRELEASED tunes out of 197. I gotta say, I'm just not believing this notice. February, 2009 will pass and I'll just have to be happy with the Sprouts I have, I'm sure.

My goodness! Could this actually be true? I'm afraid i'm siding with the sceptics right now,at least until i hear or see something like evidence. Would the person who posted this kindly reveal the issue of mojo that this article appeared in? Of course,i'm secretly hoping that i'm wrong & that February will reunite us with one of the world's most wonderful songwriters. In a world full of uncertainty, this article does little to allay our doubts but gives us plenty to hope for!!

Well, I for one am very optimistic about this one. Paddy always takes his time in making an album (never to be rushed or forced into a style of the now time music scene- which is crap anyway due to melody absence) and his arrangements is top notch. Sometimes it takes a few (cd in my hi-fi) rotations to get to his lyrics and that’s what makes him great in writing lyrics too. The man’s a genius and I’d give my left ball to write lyrics he does. True talent. But I’m not here to sweet talk the man, just to say I’m waiting patiently here in South Africa for his next album. Not much on the current circuit that can get me exited anymore. So be hopeful my Sprout soul mates, it will come because Paddy (like us) loves music.
Bring on those melody driven songs oh highness; I’ll savior it whilst watching an African afternoon sunset.
Being a songwriter and in a band” Present Future” myself I say to you Paddy:” Long live the King”…..he never left the house

I know it´s better to have a pleasant surprise rather than a sour dissapointment, but if "Chinese Democracy" is in stores now... I don´t see why "Let's Change the World With Music" can´t someday soon.

I love Paddy and am awaiting the new material as much as anyone. Andromeda and Gunman had their moments for sure, but nowhere near the majesty of Jordan.
As I write it is almost February. I won't be holding my breath! :)
Still, you can always search for albums by SNAIL on torrent (it's ok, I know him and he gives them away). He ADORES Paddy too.
Peace.

RE: Till Raether
Random comment: are you the same Till Raether that took the multi-national group through the heartland of Germany in 1994 and in Dinkelsbuehl took over the Italian restaurant where your FUB student group danced the night away past closing?

I believe it and can't wait.
It's all across the internet and seems tangible.
People couldn't believe the Kate Bush Aerial release was ever going to materialise but it did.
I was also very pleased to hear the acoustic versions of "Steve Mcqueen" and they display the many layers and textures of Paddy's music.
This is great news.

You're seriously missing out if you think 'I Trawl The Megahertz' is a poor album - the best album paddy's done along with 'Jordan' to my ears - Let's hope the new one's a cracker!

Well i'm another on i thought 'I Trawl The Megahertz' was really bad i think Paddy could so much better ,i was waiting ages for the album to be released and rushed to the shops to buy it, i was horrified when i heard it, but they do say theres a fine line between genius and madness and i do think he crossed it on this album, but can't wait for the new one.

Megahertz was astonishing - and astonishingly good. The new PS album is unlikely to be anything like it. But I'm looking forward to it as much as I'm looking forward to anything new from The Blue Nile. That's saying something.
