Brand X
Unorthodox Behaviour

Jazz-rock thrills… coming in the air tonight.

Brand X

In autumn 1975, Genesis were making their new album with Phil Collins doubling up as lead singer drummer. Yet Collins had to interrupt the sessions at Trident Studios to dash down the corridor and finish Brand X’s debut. This UK jazz-fusion band formed around bassist Percy Jones and ex-Spiders From Mars keyboards player Robin Lumley (cousin of Joanna!). Collins stepped in when their original drummer quit, and stuck around. Unorthodox Behaviour’s instrumental doodling is the sound of ace session men (who may well have ‘inhaled’) indulging their love of Weather Report. Basslines bubble like lava pools and a Father Christmas-bearded Collins rattles, paradiddles and grooves; but there’s also a conciseness here, occasionally absent in the music Collins was simultaneously making with Genesis. Despite their titles, Euthanasia Waltz and Born Ugly have a sunny disposition, while other tracks exude the same hint of menace as that face peaking through slatted blinds on the cover. With that Genesis reunion out of the way, any chance of a Brand X residency at Ronnie Scott’s?
