WOODPIGEON IS THE nom de folk-rock of Calgary’s Mark Hamilton and his buddies, people who think nothing of dipping into the school music cupboard for the odd scraper or glockenspiel to add humble textures to their outdoorsy, frosty-morning music.
Creating a stir on tour in Europe over the past month or so, with Calexico and others, playing songs off their till-now-only-available-on-import album Songbook, Woodpigeon describe themselves as sounding like “pianos rusting in country fields” – which you have to admit is a pretty compelling image.
But don’t take Hamilton’s word for it. His UK label, the festival-affiliated End Of The Road, are making a free track available to MOJO users. It’s the simultaneously wry and lovely Home As A Romanticized Concept Where Everyone Loves You Always And Forever.
MOJO is put in mind of a more robust Tunng crossed with a more ethereal King Creosote, with added leaves. But don’t take our word for it. For evidence of their about-to-happenness, here’s their song A Slight Return Home soundtracking Nina Ricci’s spring-summer collection in Paris earlier this year.
Songbook is out now on End Of The Road Records.
