How To Buy...NICK CAVE!

Few have sustained a long and eventful career like Warracknabeal, southeastern Australia’s Nick Cave. Since putting out his first record with The Boys Next Door in 1979, the man moved onto incredible highs and new lows with The Birthday Party and then Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, followed by an array of cool film soundtracks and, in 2007, the formation of a whole other band, Grinderman. Consequently, to get the ten proper best buys in the catalogue offers a challenge - there’s so much there to choose from. So what are we saying, readers? Tender Prey over Kicking Against The Pricks? Grinderman versus Junkyard? And how about that three-disc Bad Seeds B-Sides and Rarities set? And is there anything not to touch with the proverbial barge pole? You tell us by posting below.

As ever, the best comments and recommendations will appear in the magazine. Cheers!

  • Murder Ballads: Nick Cave’s flawlessly bizarre mix of filth and fervor.

Grinderman: His rude and nasty mid-life masterpiece.

Tender Prey: An awesome blend of fear, desperation and hard drugs.

Let Love In: The brilliant drink and drug-fueled soundtrack of Nick Cave’s new life as a resident of Sao Paulo.

No More Shall We Part: A loved-up Nick Cave ditches the dope and heartbreak and embraces his domestic side.

Nocturama: A terrible way to end Blixa Bargeld’s tenure as a Bad Seed. Not great.

  • From Her To Eternity - The aural equivalent of being sucked into the Mississippi mud.

Murder Ballads - The album Cave was born to make....a Killer...ouch!....sorry.

Tender Prey - He don't look too good on the sleeve but i guess that's because of what was going on underneath it.

Mutiny/Bad Seed EP - Two gloriously murky masterpieces on one shiny disc.

The Boatman's Call - Contemplation and constraint.

  • For me its all about Abatoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheos. Cave combines tender gospel from the London Community choir with dark biblical references to create a double album of unexpected consistency. Its hard to pick a favourite tune because the standards are so high (although my favourite this week is easy money) but despite it's length it is never boring or samey. A strong contender for the best album of the last decade. Grown up music.

  • How can anyone possibly say. Such a strong body of work. But, i'd go with what other folk have been saying here.

Tender Prey simply for the Mercy Seat
    Murder Ballads for the laughter
Abbatoir blues for finally arriving as a true great with taste
Kicking Against The pricks for interpretation
    Let Love ir the voodoo

Just one thing missing from all this consideration of Nick Cave. The bad Seeds. What a band and for that a final decision; Let Love In

  • Just to be perverse I will go with "Your Funeral My Trial" mainly because of the gothic nightmare that is "The Carny" and The Bad Seeds evocative performance of it in Wim Wenders' "Wings Of Desire".

Also not to forget "Henry's Dream" featuring the terrific "Straight To You" which set the tone for "The Boatman's Call" but also great fire and brimstone performances of "Papa Won't Leave You Henry" and "I Had A Dream Joe". And what about the truly terrifying "Christina The astonishing" ?

  • Junkyard - The Birthday Party
    From Her to Eternity
(I feel obliged to rep for the early sound here - blood, fire, death, obsession, clangy guitars, screechy guitars. Junkyard's still the most thrilling moment, though it's a bit painful to drop the EPs. And the Peel sessions - that version of Loose! But Blixa makes the best noises on Her to Eternity - the big Avalanche chord hooray!)
    The Good Son
(The lush sound, fully developed. Disappointed me at the time - I wanted more Mercy Seat. Over the years, I've come to love it. Maybe his most consistent set of songs?)
    The Boatman's Call
(Or maybe this is. Has its haters - I can see why - but I imagine it will top the guide. I can see why. A one off.)
    Let Love In
(Difficult, difficult choice at the end. Your Funeral almost gets it (does Scum count of part of it now? That might edge it in), ditto Tender Prey, and I keep thinking of songs that I love - Song of Joy, Wanted Man, Tupelo, Nature Boy, Breathless, As I sat Sadly... I mean the list is nearly endless; but both parts of Do You Love Me, I Let Love In and Nobody's Baby Now nick (lols) it for this.)
And agreed to Richard Downes - the Bad Seeds are an amazing band; they make Cave at his most half-arsed (Hi Nocturama!) sound bearable to good. And god bless Mick Harvey in particular.

  • I have to agree with Jack the Kipper's post. Your Funeral...My Trial and Henry's Dream shouldn't be overlooked. Likewise - Tender Presy for sure and also The Firstborn is Dead.

Difficult to be objective when you consider where/what you were when you first heard these albums.

My preferences are as follows (and I find it hard to stack the Birthday Party in amongst the NC/Bad Seed stuff <especially first thing in the morning):

    1. Your Funeral... My Trial
    2. The Firstborn Is Dead
    3. From Her to Eternity
    4. Tender Prey
    5. Henry's Dream
    6. The Good Son
    7. Kicking Against the Pricks
    8. Let Love In
    9. Murder Ballads
    10. The Boatman's Call
    11. No More Shall We Part
    12. Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus
    13. Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
    14. Nocturama

    1. Door Door - The Boys Next Door
    2. Prayers on Fire
    3. Junkyard
    4. Mutiny/The Bad Seed EPs

Complilations, B-Sides and Rarities are what they are.

  • So hard to say, but i have to go for the Birthday Party as it was my introduction to the man and what was a time when most people i knew thought him/them something of a joke -- talk about kicking against the pricks. Although, i've never felt let down by a Nick Cave release, i still don't think he's topped the quality and intensity of the Bad Seed EP

    1/ Mutiny/Bad seed EPs
    2/ Prayers on fire
    2/ Junkyard
    3/ Kicking against the pricks
    4/ Your funeral, my trial
    5/ Tender Prey
    6/ Door, Door
    7/ The good son
    8/ Let love in
    9/ Dig!!! Lazarus dig
    10/The firstborn is dead

  • Cave is one of those rare artists like Elvis Costello who have actually gotten BETTER as they've grown older and moved further away from their punk rock roots. Cave is arguably at the peak of his powers right now!
    Here are my preferences:
NUMBER ONE: Abbatoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus
Minus Blixa Bargeld's sometimes forced avant-garde touches, Cave crafts an his hardest rockin' album in a decade. A rare double album with no weak tracks. It's only been three years but it already sounds timeless.
    Number 2: Let Love In
The definitive Bad Seeds album, it touches all the bases: Gothic (Red Right Hand, Loverman), Violent (Thirsty Dog, Jangling Jack), and Rapturous (Nobody's Baby Now, Do You Love Me?). I'll never forget when I heard Red Right Hand for the first time (on an X-Files promo of all things!)
    Number 3: The Boatman's Call
Cave's most personal album (and the start of his somewhat generic 'singer-songwriter' period). The songs still send shivers, even if the album is a little one note.
Number 4: The Birthday Party - Hits
All the best Birthday Party tunes on one disc. Almost too much to go through in one session.
    Number 5: B-Sides and Rarities
Rivals Dylan's Bootleg Series 1-3 in terms of scope, depth, and the way it sheds new light on the songwriter's journey. Absolutely essential
Bubbling under: The Boys Next Door- Door Door.
I don't know how much exposure this has overseas, but here in Australia, Shivers is an underground classic (thanks to an irony-free Screaming Jets cover). That one songs beats anything by the Birthday Party.

PS- could you website editors put every 'How To Buy' poll up on the blog. We don't get the new issue in Australia until the month after, when the poll is closed. I want to be able to vote on each one!

  • No More Shall We Part

Definately his finest work, has a tenderness that that could soften any heart yet, is still powerful and intense. The lyrics are beautiful and heartfelt and the music ranges from being as delicate as a snowflake in the early morning light to as raw as a chainsaw cutting through a great redwood.

Standout tracks include God is in the House, Fiffteen Feet of Pure White Snow and Halleluljah.

A contender for greatest album of all time.

  • My how to buy... Nick Cave!!!
    1. The best Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album to me is "No More Shall We Part" after four years with no new stuff the longest break for Cave. With a new wife, finally kicking the drugs and off course it is recorded at Abby Road what more could Mojo readers want.

    2. Nick Cave and Warren Ellis "The Proposition Soundtrack" is something I don't think is going to make it into Mojo's top ten of his albums but i think it is one of his most beautiful and bleak albums and it really can stand by itself. Stripping it all back to just piano and violin with Nick mumbling in the back ground.

    3. "Grinderman" is when all hell breaks loose again! Cave playing guitar for the first time is a truly great move. Getting rid of all the Bad Seeds, just four of them was a brave move too. I didn't really think he should have gone back to them this year, I didn't see the point after this.

    4. "Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus" should have been the final 13th epic double album from the Bad Seeds. It was so epic, recorded so quick too and adding the London Community Gospel Choir into the mix was a brilliant move too.

    5. "Mutiny/Bad Seed EP" not really an album but two EPs, it is The Birthday Party's last recording too.

    6. "Your Funeral...My Trial" is the best of early The Bad Seeds albums.

    7. "Henry's Dream" Nick Cave hates it but I love it.

    8. "The Boatman's Call" will be the top album in your chart

    9. The Birthday Party "Prayers On Fire" is a great way to start. Brilliant debut album.

    10. "B-Sides and Rarities" best collection of throw away songs ever put together, plus it's three discs.

AVOID. Die Haut and Nick Cave "Burnin The Ice" is just really bad. Nick Cave, Blixa Bargeld and Mick Harvey Soundtracks to "Ghosts" and "To Have & To Hold" are pointless and boring. The Boys Next Door "Door, Door" before Nick could really write a song but Roland S. Howard's classic Shivers is on it so it's not all bad.

    6. The First Born Is Dead

    7. The Proposition soundtrack

    8. No More Shall We Part

    9. Abattoir Blues/ The Lyre of Orpheus

  • Thanks for your fascinating article. Other thing is that mesothelioma is generally a result of the breathing of materials from mesothelioma, which is a dangerous material. It truly is commonly seen among staff in the construction industry who have long contact with asbestos. It could be caused by residing in asbestos protected buildings for a long time of time, Inherited genes plays an important role, and some people are more vulnerable for the risk as compared with others.

I additionally believe that mesothelioma cancer is a extraordinary form of cancers that is normally found in people previously subjected to asbestos. Cancerous cells form in the mesothelium, which is a protecting lining that covers the vast majority of body's internal organs. These cells ordinarily form within the lining with the lungs, belly, or the sac that encircles one's heart. Thanks for discussing your ideas.
