Casey Dienel, the 22-year old creative force behind Boston's White Hinterland, possesses the sort of instrumental and vocal ambition that has seen the likes of Cat Power, Joanna Newsom and The Fiery Furnaces find such dedicated swathes of fans. Indeed, anyone who was lucky enough to witness the band's - Dienel (vocals, piano), Davis Hooker (guitars, bass), Matt Meyer (drums) - freewheeling performance at this month's MOJO Club, will attest to the wildly varied strain of musical influences (jazz, French psychedelia, avant-pop) that form their circus of sound.
White Hinterland's debut album, the beguiling Phylactery Factory (released earlier this year) was followed this month by a French language EP, Luniculaire - a collection that saw Dienel taking "the focus off of the lyrical narrative" and "putting the emphasis back on to the sound of the vocal.
