Led Zeppelin are planning to tour and record without frontman Robert Plant, says John Paul Jones. Zeppelin's quiet bassist told BBC Radio Devon that they were searching for a new singer following Plant's rejection of future Zep activity.

The band's original members, Plant, Jones and Jimmy Page reunited (with Jason Bonham on drums) in December 2007 for a triumphant show at London's 02 Arena.

Speaking at a guitar show in Exeter, Jones said: "We are trying out a couple of singers. We want to do it. It's sounding great and we want to get on and get out there."It's got to be right. There's no point in just finding another Robert."

The Zeppelin saga continues...

Island Records, a bastion of British music for the last five decades, will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2009 with a flurry of events helmed by founder Chris Blackwell.

Blackwell founded the Island label in Kingston, Jamaica in 1959, before relocating to London in the early 60s. The imprint would go on house the likes of Bob Marley, Nick Cave, Roxy Music, Amy Winehouse U2.

The Island 50 festival is planned for May next year and will be just one highlight in a 12 month programme that is set to include TV/Radio Documentaries, the release of the Island 50 book, exhibitions, the Island 50 Film Festival, classic album reissues, deluxe boxsets and new digital bundles.

And finally...farewell Merl Saunders. Jerry Garcia's right-hand keys man died on Friday at the age of 74. Here's a reminder of his Hammond organ expertise:

  • That's great for people who want to go
hear Zep songs live, but why would the band
want to potentially ruin their legacy after
    28 years? Look at Queen!

  • Money, I guess. Or maybe they're bored. All bands who create music of lasting appeal have the right to get fat off it in their dotage, I say.

  • Does any one really care about Led Zep? Bad in the '70's and '80's. What would make you expect anything now?

  • It won't be Zeppelin without Plant. That said if Page and JPJ have something to say musically why shouldn't they record and go out and play. Give Jason and the new vocalist 'the book' let them choose a runic symbol each and just record and tour using the symbols rather than a band name.

JPJ said it was all about 'performance' with Zeppelin, well 2/4 members therefore isn't enough for them to go out under the Zeppelin banner. Let that name stay in retirement, the legacy untarnished.
