NEWS DIGEST: Tuesday, October 7

Depeche Mode have renewed their deal with Mute/EMI and are set to release their 12th as-yet-untitled studio album early next year.

At a press conference in Berlin the band also announced details of their 2009 Tour of the Universe, which will take in 28 stadium shows across the world. The jaunt will kick off on May 10 in Tel Aviv, Israel and will include a date at London's O2 Arena on May 30. For more details, including info on how to but tickets, head HERE.

The Experience Hendrix tour, a five-week trek across the US featuring the likes of The Doors' Robbie Krieger, Aerosmith's Brad Whitford, Bernard Allison and Doyle Bramhall will pay homage to the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix when it launches later this month.

Buddy Guy, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Hubert Sumlin, Jonny Lang and Hendrix's former bandmates Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell are also all set to appear. Cox recently told Rolling Stone: “Nothing can compare to playing with the original master. But this tour is helping to validate the musical genius that I knew, by bringing Jimi Hendrix into the new millennium.”

The 19-date ramble kicks off in New Hampshire on October 14. For more, head HERE.

For any budding musicians out there wishing to rise to Hendrix standards, you may be interested in enrolling at the Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp. Upcoming axe heroes are being given the opportunity to learn from real guitar legends at London's Abbey Road Studios in preparation for a performance at the legendary Cavern Club in Liverpool with that most unlucky of drummer's Pete Best. Already confirmed for the event (due to take place November 4 - 9) are Nick Mason (Pink Floyd), Bill Wyman (ex Rolling Stones), Jeff Foskett (Beach Boys), Mark Hudson (songwriter/producer Aerosmith), Kip Winger (Winger), Mick Ralphs (Mott The Hoople, Bad Company), Earl Slick (Bowie, Lennon) and Chris Slade (AC/DC). And finally...Noel Gallagher is used to being accused of pinching the odd riff or two from the annals of British rock, but it's unlikely the Oasis chief could have predicted the latest piece of comparison tomfoolery. Some bright spark has suggested that the band's The Turning (taken from Oasis' new album Dig Out Your Soul - reviewed in the current issue of MOJO) contains striking similarities to Cliff Richard's 1976 hit Devil Woman. Apart from those minor verse changes, I can't really see it myself. Still, you can decide for yourself by clicking the clips below. This also means we get to run a video of Cliff in all his strange '70s glory. Doesn't he get his hands nice and wide!
