AS A SONGWRITER, COMPOSER and arranger, he has shaped the world of sound as we know it, not least through his work with The Byrds, Brian Wilson and, latterly, Joanna Newsom and Dangermouse. Now, the legendary Van Dyke Parks has collaborated with Inara George on her new album, An Invitation.
Born in 1974, Inara – the daughter of late Little Feat leader Lowell – has known Parks from birth, making the pair’s collaboration long overdue. But now together the pair have created an ambitious, orchestral song cycle that draws on both universal and personal themes.
Ever the arch-conceptualist, Parks explains: "There are different characters in each piece, but it all feels like a connected event. There are certainly different scenes on the record, and that's what I like. I think that takes real talent, as a writer, to fictionalize a reality the way Inara has done."
An Invitation is out now in the US on the Everloving label, and is set for release throughout Europe shortly, but UK fans can hear excerpts at myspace.com/inarageorge
Furthermore, British fans will get a rare treat when the duo preview the album with a one-off MOJO Club show at London’s 400-capacity Jazz Café on November 23.
Tickets for this truly unique show are on sale now and are available here.
