ONCE DUBBED “THE BIGGEST challenge to The Beatles” by none other than The Beatles’ John Lennon, The Dave Clark Five made hay while the sun shone on the ’60s beat group boom, scoring consecutive UK Number 1s with Glad All Over and Bits And Pieces and leading the vanguard of the so-called “British Invasion”, landing 16 consecutive Billboard Top 30 berths between 1964 and 1967.
Marketing the stompy, so-called “Tottenham Sound”, the DC5 made 13 appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, more than any other band. And in 2008, their phenomenal stateside success was acknowledged when actor Tom Hanks inducted The Dave Clark Five into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
The Dave Clark Five on Ed Sullivan. Ain’t he shifty?
Their purple pop patch is comprehensively reflected in their aptly titled 28-track compilation, The Hits. It’s out now, but you could score one of 10 giveaway copies if you answer the following correctly…
Which famous film director made the DC5’s Help!-style movie, Catch Us If You Can (US title: Having A Wild Weekend)?
a) Federico Fellini
b) Richard Lester
c) John Boorman
