The bard of Barking has been digging the Canadian Wilco over the last 366…
“The Weakerthans, a Canadian band. They’ve made a great couple of LPs over the last five or six years and then they put out a corker late last year called Reunion Tour, which has been the soundtrack of my year. They sound a bit like Wilco’s Being There but with a wry sense of humour and they are very subtle and very Canadian, like there’s a line in Civil Twilight where the singer talks about how when he gets bored he recites the name of Hollywood film stars and provinces: ‘Oh, Ontario! Oh, Jennifer Jason Leigh!’
I saw them at SXSW, and they were really good, I was very impressed and checked out the LPs, and they hit the spot. They’ve got a great guitar sound and there are unusual instruments in there, and they are writing great songs and weirding them up a bit. I’ve also been listening to Fleet Foxes. It’s the weather in their songs, you can almost feel the cold in the air when they talk about winter and the freshness in the air when they talk about spring. I really like what they’re doing.”
Check out this month’s MOJO for more Best Things from Billy Connolly, U2 Oasis and more.
