Squeeze’s McCartney (or was he Lennon?) was kept on his toes by sneers and angst in 2008.
“The best thing I've heard all year would have to be the Justin Currie album, his lyrical bent is often dark and mosaic, his style is sublime. The lyrical content of this album is like looking into a burn or a sore on an arm. Its painful at first and then you see it with more understanding once you discover how and why it has taken place. Albums like these keep me on my toes, keep me looking inward for all the right answers. I hear the challenge of each line and the hurt it may have taken to write it, I enjoy the sneer and the angst. It’s a beautifully recorded record, too, which is part of its trap. You are lured into its deepness with the crispness of the sound. My second album of the year is the David Byrne & Brian Eno album; here two old friends come together and make a record that is fresh and inspiring. New boundaries are not crossed here, but old ones are fenced and varnished; it says what it is on the tin. The new way to receive albums is by getting it directly downloaded from David’s web site, which I love. Who needs HMV and dinosaur record companies to deliver music to the ears?”
