Bloc Party’s shy young frontman liked pop this year
“I’ve mainly been listening to singles, but an album I really like is I Am The Fun Blame Monster by Menomena, an American band that do this very cut and paste, broken music that’s all kind of played live even though it sounds very studio-based. It’s very atmospheric, it has shades of DJ Shadow, it’s a really textured sampled song-based record. Then there is Wiley’s Wearing My Rolex. He’s a British grime rapper and crossed over into the mainstream this year and this is my favourite pop single of the year. It’s a real sassy electro number and I’m glad he’s had a successful song as I’ve always liked him. Another single I like is Kylie Minogue’s The One, it’s really great euphoric pop and I’m amazed it wasn’t released as the first single from her album X because I think if it had been, it would have been received in a whole different way. It’s just a very creamy Cathy Dennis-esque kind of pop song, it’s perfect.”
