Mitch Mitchell, the drummer with The Jimi Hendrix Experience, has been found dead in his hotel room in Portland, Oregon. He was 61.
Mitchell had spent the last few months touring the US with the Experience Hendrix band. Initial reports suggest that that he died from natural causes. A full autopsy will take place within the next few days.
A session drummer for a host of '60s rock icons, Mitchell was one of the most sort after sticksmen of his generation. He joined Jimi Hendrix and Noel Redding in the Experience in 1966 providing the furious, eclectic rhythms for their trio of seminal albums Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland. He was the last surviving member of the group, following Hendrix's death in 1970 and Redding's passing in 2003.

A bit humbling to think those people who saw The Experiece at that blues extraveganza in LA were some of the last people to see him live.
Prime indeed. Prime indeed.
