Via Malta Italy Egypt and Chatham, the young architect of eerie '50s folk blues is digging another architect of eerie '50s folk blues.
“Richard Hawley. I discovered his five albums [Lady’s Bridge, Coles Corner, Lowedges, Late Night Final, Richard Hawley] this year after going on tour with him. I was really taken aback by him live, it was immediate, I was captivated. He’s a brilliant performer, and you can tell he really means it and I learned a lot from him and I really didn’t think after listening to all those great artists from the past like Roy Orbison, Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash that anything around now could have that huge effect on me, but he did. He’s just a creative spirit, he’s a romantic, and I relate to that. I got the records after seeing him and it’s clear he’s not afraid to be himself. There’s none of this cool stuff going on with him that there is with a lot of artists today. Instead, he’s a really great songwriter, guitarist and singer. He’s not afraid to make it innocent and beautiful but there’s a darkness in there too.”
