Paul McCartney has delved back into the realm of Beatles myth by announcing that Carnival Of Light, the band's lost 14-minute experimental track, is likely to be released into the public domain.
Commissioned in 1967 by McCartney's friend and International Times founder Barry Miles, it was used in the Million Volt Light and Sound Rave event at the Roundhouse, its swathes of instrumental chaos inspired by the works of German avant-garde pioneer Karlheinz Stockhausen. McCartney has said it is the sound of The Beatles "going off piste". The piece was slated for inclusion on 1996's Anthology 2 collection but was vetoed off the album by George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Front Row programme, Macca teased millions of Fabs fans by saying: "The time has come for it to get its moment". Describing the recording session itself, he revealed: "I said all I want you to do is just wander around all the stuff, bang it, shout, play it, it doesn't need to make any sense. Hit a drum then wander on to the piano, hit a few notes, just wander around. So that's what we did and then put a bit of an echo on it. It's very free".
The news arrives as we await the release of McCartney's third offering under his modern-day experimental banner The Fireman. Electric Arguments is set for release next Monday (November 24).
You can hear the interview on BBC Radio 4 on Thursday (Nov 20) at 1915 GMT.

Going by what Ian McDonald wrote about the piece in Revolution In The Head, it should be an interesting listen (though I'd still probably trade it for Gomper on Satanic Majesties).

Which reminds me, I'm still waiting for a lavish Mojo article praising all those great songs, sounds and bold experimentation on "Satanic Majesties" - which I would happily re-listen to hundreds of times over that dreadfully ideas-free "Exile on Lame Street"
- Alan Lord, really "of Montreal"
finishing up me own killer début CD tomorrow

RE: Alan Lord
Don't even think about uttering a disparaging word about the legend that is Exile. Makes the Beatles stuff sound like prep school lab experiments.

Clearly McCartney is currently in the mode to bring up "Carnival of Light" - as his new Fireman album is about to be released. I really enjoy McCartney's imaginative/experimental side which I believe is fully intertwined in what gives him the wonderous ability to create all the amazing (and often highly popular) stuff that he does (and blessedly continues to do.) "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" is an especial favorite of mine - which is clearly John & Paul giving into this wonderful "Goon" part of themselves. Paul's Fireman and 'Liverpool Sound Collage' projects are also a clear continuation of this kind of creativity. John got to put "Revolution 9' on the "White Album" - and George (who blocked Paul from letting "Carnival" be issued) produced all sorts of Indian-flavored experimentation on Beatles albums (not to mention his own "Electronic Sounds") I say PLEASE - to Ringo, Yoko and Olivia - clear the way to let Paul get "Carnival of Light" issued for fans like myself who are deeply interested in this side of their art. (And may I suggest that the full length "Helter Skelter" and the complete-uncut "You Know My Name" would make most appropriate 'B-sides' for such a release !)

Finally! I've been curious about this one for ages, and it's about they wheted our curiosity. I love how no article I've read about this has the guts to mention it was George who blocked the song. Only "bandmates" are referred to.
I've actually been pretty vocal about this one recently, but that's generally my luck of timing. Whenever I start referring to something or listening to something, I'm already set for another related thing that happens 2 weeks later.
Let's hope Paul gets a little more underway with "Now and Then" which he said he was in the process of doing. That would be perfect if they packaged it with CoL. I predict this will all happen with the catologue reissing.
