Tim Burgess: The Best Thing I’ve Heard All Year

...NEXT

The Charlatans’ eternal frontman was touched by much music in 2008.

“I was really touched this year by Soul On Fire by Spiritualized which is on Songs In A&E. The whole album is really beautiful, really emotional but this song it’s just amazing, I’m completely taken with it. It’s so personal, and intimate and the lyrics are… “Come on my love/ Come on my child/ Let heaven flow/ Into your soul/ Let it come on down/ Ease away pain”… they just touch me. I used to really like Spaceman 3 and they influenced us a lot in The Charlatans’ early days, their sound and the concept, and I always preferred them to Spiritualized, but this one, well I saw them on Later With Jools Holland and it completely caught my attention and I got myself a copy of the album off Peter [Holmström, guitarist] of the Dandy Warhols and it’s just a great song. I think it’s about me and my missus when I hear it. I’ve been on tour buses all this year, a lot of the time I’ve just sat at the front of the bus with my computer, listening to music on my iPod and this summed up where I was at emotionally. As did Cat Power’s The Greatest. It was a record I kind of ignored when it first came out in 2006 as the person who gave me it, well I wasn’t too keen on, but again I’ve been listening to it on the tour bus and her songwriting and her voice, both are amazing. She’s my dream duet. I’d really like to work with her.”

  • How come Tim is quoting the lyrics from on fire from let it come down, not soul on fire from songs in A&E?
