CELEBRATING THE SILVER jubilee of the release of Echo & The Bunnymen's Ocean Rain, and augmenting the revealing feature about same in the current MOJO magazine, MOJO Deputy Editor Andrew Male takes his espadrilles and too-short 501s for a rose-tinted saunter down Memory Lane, L6. Along the way he encounters some somewhat "formative" work by Anton Corbijn and lashings of brilliant music from - let's face it - one of the Top 5 bands of the '80s. Let the Tube-off commence!
1. The Puppet
Great 1981 footage of the band from the Urgh! A Music War documentary. Moody, literary goth girls dug the Ian McCulloch posture from the off.
2. Rescue
Father, whatever happened to BBC2's Pop Carnival? Fun and frolics and "very good indie" with Steve Blacknell and the band in Sefton Park in 1982. I was there!
3. The Back Of Love
Mac and strings and drums wow the girls with Bunny funkiness at the Royal Albert Hall, July 1983. God, they were good live!
4. Do It Clean
Yes! The live showstopper! The definitive version, as featured on the B side of The Killing Moon 12", July 1983. "When I fall in love..."
5. Higher Hell
Not their finest hour but worth it for the 1983 vintage Corbijn verité. The man's a film director now, you know.
6. The Killing Moon
Brian Griffin's bank-breaking 1984 video. Who knew silk was so prohibitively expensive during the miners' strike?
7. Villiers Terrace
"Bopshoowaddywaddy / Haile Selassie!" Acoustic, shot in Liverpool's legendary Brian's Diner in 1984. Flat caps, chip fat and half-mast Euro jeans on the Scouse trendoids.
8. September Song (Ian McCulloch solo)
As Youtube poster 'saturnflower' puts it "The song isn't my cup of tea, really. But he is so beautiful in this video it gives me chills. And that voice... Seriously. Sorry for the poor video quality..."
9. Bring On The Dancing Horses
Corbijn art! A cow is a horse! Or a fish! Oh Lord! Little can diminish the epic beauty of this track but surely it was the beginning of the end. Mac still looks great, though, even if the hair was getting, like, Winehouse large...
10. The Game
Hangovers, shorts, comedy antics, foreign locations and podgy Will Sergeant. Looking at it now, the signs were there...
11. Faith And Healing (Ian McCulloch solo)
From 1989, directed by that Corbijn idiot again. I don't even remember this!
12. Enlighten Me
Altogether now... "It was cheap at half the price... there's a splinter in your splendour today". Blimey! The Bunnymen with, erm, Noel Burke on vocals. Imagine Will Sergeant's boot stamping on Ian McCulloch's face forever.
13. Nothing Lasts Forever
Weird. McCulloch comes back to the band in 1997 and sounds like that pillock Richard Ashcroft. Good and whiny and defeated but can someone stop those backing vocals?

Ocean Rain is fine ... but Crocodiles is damn close to the greatest album ever made. They nailed that first album on my turntable for most of the 1980s. "Key monk, key monk ..."

Doctor, The Bunnymen of the 80s and 90s still provide the incidental music to everything from inside my head. How can I make sure it never goes away?!
