Edwyn Collins on The Isley Brothers’ My Love Is Your Love (Forever)
The Isley Brothers
My Love Is Your Love (Forever)
(Tamla B-side, 1967)
Edwyn Collins: “It’s from 1967, written by Ivy Jo Hunter and Stevie Wonder, produced by Ivy Jo Hunter. Smokey Robinson And The Miracles did a version of it the same year, but this is my favourite version. It’s a lovely song. Motown made such good music, and it’s a great piece of Northern Soul. It’s really exciting. I’ve always been a big Motown fan. I can’t dance to the music but I can jog away to it. I’ve got a collection of Motown singles – 1000… 2000… 3000… 4000… I’m not sure how many, exactly – But Motown’s not really influenced my songwriting as such or musicianship. In terms of that, it was more Stax, Otis Redding, Booker T And The MGs, that influenced me. But there’s so much great music, that you can’t fault Motown.”
Read great pieces about the 100 Greatest Motown Songs in this month’s MOJO magazine.
