No Line On The Horizon

Van Morrison has signed a deal that will bring his back catalogue to EMI, who will release his recent live performance of Astral Weeks early next year.

“I brought these records to EMI because they seem to have people with vision, who have 'ears' and who understand the significance of the complex arrangements and the classic essence of recordings like Astral Weeks," Morrison says. "They're committed to maintaining the integrity of the records I make. That is what it's all about to me."

A new documentary on The Doors will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Written and directed by Tom DiCillo, When You’re Strange will feature unseen footage that helps documents the story of the band from their inception to the unexpected death of Jim Morrison in 1971. Keyboardist Ray Manzarek has described the film as "the anti-Oliver Stone" version. "This will be the true story of the Doors," he said.

Rhino will release a soundtrack to When You're Strange next summer.

Paul Simon has been appointed to the Board of Trustees at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. It was announced yesterday that the legendary songwriter will play an advisory role at the music school which will involve “interactions with students and faculty."

Aretha Franklin will perform at Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony in Washington DC next month in front of an estimated four million people. The singer, who also performed at Bill Clinton’s induction in 1993, attended an Obama rally in Detroit last summer where the president elect was seeing singing her hit song Chain Of Fools.

Prince held a private playback session for his new album this week before allowing an LA radio station to premiere four of the tracks. The as-yet-untitled album, which is currently without a record label, is said to be heavily inspired by Jimi Hendrix and contains a cover of the Tommy James & the Shondells’ classic Crimson & Clover.

And finally, watch Prince perform on stage with James Brown and…Michael Jackson! In this rare clip from 1983, the Godfather of Soul summons the purple one for some improvisational jamming after a reluctant Jackson is coaxed to join in. It has to be seen to be believed…

  • What a fascinating piece of footage. But why are both MJ and Prince so reluctant to perform? Especially with the Godfather in the house. After all is'nt performing on stage what they are all about...?

  • And that radio station was....

INDIE 103.1! Prince invited Mr. Shovel back to his place to listen to the new album. After being thoroughly impressed, Mr. Shovel agreed to take the tracks and play them on Jonsey's Jukebox @ 12.

Expecting another fine set of songs picked by Steve (spare the couple of corporate junk songs they force him to play), I hear this great new version of Crimson & Clover. Imagine the shock on my face when they said it was a new track by Prince. I'll definately keep my eye on that album's remaining processes.
