The Specials' Jerry Dammers has hit out at the band's plans for a reunion tour.
The founding member issued a statement yesterday describing next year's 30th anniversary shows as "a takeover rather than a proper reunion". Claiming that he was "driven out" of the group's plans, Dammers maintains that he "persevered for over a year" to rejoin the band only to find that "every conceivable obstacle was put in the way" of him attending or organising rehearsals.
Dammers also refuted singer Terry Hall's claim that "the door remains open" to his band mate and that relations between the two parties are still strong. In contrast, the keyboardist said that he had dreamed of a reunion for over 25 years and was "deeply shocked" to receive "lawyers" letters stating that former members have resolved to go ahead without him, and that Jerry is not to speak to any of them". "The prodigal sons came home, kicked me out, and have left the door open, great," he said.
The statement went on: "Attempts to imply that any proposed tour has Jerry's 'blessing', at this stage, are also highly misleading. These seem to be part of a wider attempt to rewrite the whole history of the band, in order to try and justify what is currently going on."
The Specials are due to perform a run of dates in April and May. Tickets are on sale now.

Coldplay have issued a statement in response to Joe Satriani's copyright lawsuit over their hit song Viva La Vida, which he claims contains "substantial" portions of his 2004 track If I Could Fly. "If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him," the band said. "Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write the song Viva La Vida. We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavors."

Jerry Dammers what a tosser.
After the Bestival gig Dammers basically slagged the band going on about how they were missing something (him), how they played without emotion, etc, etc. He has also said how he really wanted to do new material (his) rather than a tribute type of gig. Now he makes out that the rest of the lads don't want him in and never did.
Seems to me Mr. Dammers is getting a bit too big for his pork pie hat. We the fans have been waiting for bloody years for the lads to get back together and we want to hear all those tunes from back then, not new tracks. Its been over 25yrs since they last played Coventry (which I was at)and of course I want to hear the old tunes - just like my nephews who grew up listening to the old tunes. Of course it would be much better if Dammers was behind the keyboards doing his thing, but with the attitude he has been displaying I can understand why the lads may not want him there. Dammers statement says that he always hoped that the lads would COME BACK to the band one day. This suggests that he (Dammers) is the band. He may have been the chief instigator back in the day, but the simple fact of the matter is that The Specials do not belong to him, The Specials long ago became the property of the people of Coventry. Its from our city that they came and its the people of Coventry that have always kept the memory of The Specials alive - just have a read of any early Enemy interviews to get an idea of what this band mean to each generation born here.
Dammers, since Bestival you have been a tosser. So if you can't get with the programme then just shut the fuck up.
I have got my tickets for the gig and am already dusting off my brogues and pork pie hat, hunting out a decent Harrington jacket and brushing up on my skanking. When they play their first home town gig I will be there too and frankly Mr. Dammers, you not being there will not make a difference to any of us.

Totally agree with you Lloyd. If the tour
does not have Jerrys blessing how come he is letting them use The Specials name.
At Bestivalthey went on as Terry Hall and
Friends.
