AS THE ’60s PROGRESSED they lost their Mod “wings” and, as their hair grew decidedly shaggier, so too did their sound. By 1967, Mod musicians had embraced psychedelia and journeyed into altogether weightier territory. This month, as MOJO magazine celebrates the so-called Heavy Mod sound with an exclusive 15-track CD of the same name, we present the wigged-out clips that show what happened when the Mods swopped pills for tabs and turned up to 11...
1. The Creation - Painter Man
“Classic art has had its day!” proclaim The Creation in what is the definitive pop art statement. Oh and check out that string-breakingly heavy violin bow action!
2. The Small Faces - Song Of A Baker
“Quirky, offbeat and very successful,” is how Colour Me Pop’s Michael Dean describes The Small Faces as Steve Marriott launches into the riff of Song Of A Baker - one of the band’s “new numbers”.
3. Deep Purple - Hush
Ritchie Blackmore gives Playboy overlord Hugh Hefner a guitar lesson before quizzing Jon Lord about “strange manifestations” and asking the band to “groove the kids” with this swift rendition of Hush.
4. The Pretty Things - LSD
Pounds, shillings and pence (Libra, Solidus, Denarius)? Or Lysergic Acid Diethylamide? Either way, this is a slice of typically unkempt post-psych from Britain’s toughest-sounding ’60s band.
5. Aphrodite’s Child - End Of The World
Like a scene from a continental Bond movie, Demis Roussos, Vangelis and Loukas Sideras add a further sense of foreboding to their apocalyptic post-Procol Harum psych by perfoming this moody number in a church.
6. The Move - Walk Upon The Water
Roy Wood leads Birmingham’s prime psych-pop adventurers through an uproarious TV performance. Also included on this run of footage are The Byrds’ Chimes Of Freedom and, from French television, “quatre garçons très sympathique”, aka The Kinks, performing Sunny Afternoon.
7. Caravan - Place Of My Own
Featuring former members of The Wilde Flowers (once also home to the teenage Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers), Caravan’s 1968 debut is a perfect example of the period during which psych met prog. The result is a fine piece of pastoral elegance.
8. The Yardbirds - Shapes Of Things
“Auf London, The Yardbirds!” featuring none other than “solo guitariste” and Telecaster-handed Jimmy Page on this freewheeling proto-hard rock classic.
9. David Axelrod - Holy Thursday
California producer/arranger David Axelrod based his 1968 album Song Of Innocence on the William Blake poetry collection. Ironically, Holy Thursday appears to have been cut to footage taken from 1972 blaxploitation classic, Super Fly.
10. Humble Pie - Natural Born Boogie
Increasingly dissatisfied with pop’s straight-jacket, Small Faces leader Steve Marriott quit the group and former the altogether earthier Humble Pie. The result provides us with a suitably chooglin’ end to MOJO's Heavy Mod playlist.
