Why Live Albums Rule!

Why Live Albums Rule!

Excitement, hits, bum notes, heckling: the spirit of rock’n’roll is alive and well in the grooves of the live album, says MOJO’s Stevie Chick.

IT WAS A TIME BEFORE the Internet – before file-sharing and downloading left much of the rock discography only a mouse-click away – and I was a budding rock obsessive, haunting the racks of Big Star Records, my local second-hand vinyl emporium, poring over sleevenotes and tracklistings, planning a voyage of discovery across a mysterious classic rock canon.

My preferred point-of-entry was the Live Album, a strategy inspired by a summer spent obsessing over my dad’s battered copy of The Who’s Live At Leeds: a scrappy faux-bootleg housing a sheaf of photocopied Who memorabilia and six sonic monsters that the band struggled to control. It was the epic, excursive My Generation that really sent me, Pete Townshend’s riffs leading the group through a series of high-drama instrumental vignettes the studio version had never even hinted at.

Live At Leeds convinced me of this: a Greatest Hits compilation might contain a group’s most famous tracks, but Live Albums delivered the same, only louder, wilder, and with longer solos. Ergo, Live Albums were objectively, unquestionably better.

At their best, Live Albums freeze the moments we all wish we’d witnessed: unexpected cover versions, guest appearances, performances that utterly eclipse the studio originals. Moments like Nina Simone and a gospel choir re-interpreting My Sweet Lord as a twenty-minute anti-war hymn before an audience of GIs at Fort Dix military base on 1972’s Emergency Ward; like the feverish interplay between drummers Clyde Stubblefield and Nate Jones throughout a thirteen-minute Cold Sweat off James Brown’s Say It Live And Loud: Live In Dallas 1968; like Aretha Franklin walking Ray Charles onstage for her encore on At The Fillmore West, trading verses with him throughout the sinfully funky gospel of Spirit In The Dark.

Live Albums possess an unguarded intimacy, the warts’n’all the studio aims to airbrush away. The Rolling Stones of 1970’s Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out played loose and dropped plenty of bum notes, but there’s a ragged violence to Jumpin’ Jack Flash that punches harder than the chart-topping studio take. Candid between-song banter is always a highlight, be it Lou Reed excoriating rock critic Robert Christgau on his Take No Prisoners set ("What does Robert Christgau do in bed? Is he a toe f****r?"), or George Clinton’s confession that he’s “higher than a motherf****r” on Funkadelic’s Live: Meadowbrook, Rochester, Michigan.

The greatest Live Albums feel like key scenes from a Rockumentary; their performances aren’t just another night on the tour, but landmarks, milestones, moments that illuminate the artist’s legend somehow. The revolutionary chaos of MC5’s Kick Out The Jams – and the frenzied parties at Detroit’s Old Grande Ballroom that the album documents – was so crucial to the mythos of the group that it remains the definitive MC5 album – detuned guitars, feedback and all.

In the hilarious music video for Yo La Tengo’s Sugarcube, Bob Odenkirk (playing headmaster of an imaginary School Of Rock) lectures his students on the ‘Foghat Principle’, that your every fourth album must be “Double Live”. While Foghat Live was, in fact, the blues-rockers’ seventh release, and a single disk at that, the Foghat Principle seemed to rule the Classic Rock era, when cutting concert albums was a staple of a touring rock band’s career. Today, groups like Pearl Jam and The Who sell soundboard recordings from every concert via their fanclubs, while British company Concertlive have hooked up with artists like The Raconteurs, Brett Anderson and Roots Manuva to sell recordings of that evening’s performance at the merchandise desk minutes after the gig’s finished. The Live Album as we once knew it, however, now seems a rarity, and recent efforts by multi-platinum rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers and Oasis are little better than tepid Greatest Hits packages with crowd noise tacked on.

Illicit live recording, however, still thrives, with modern technology offering digital recording devices that are easily hidden from venue security; indeed, most of us could adequately bootleg a concert ourselves on a mobile phone. The advent of the internet, however, means these modern bootleggers are more likely to be sharing their recordings with fellow fans for free, rather than trying to turn a sneaky profit on a stack of Xerox-inlaid C90s down the local flea market.

Not so the mysterious collector who, earlier this year, pressed up 100 copies of a previously uncirculated Velvet Underground show at New York City Gymnasium, 1967, and sold them on ebay. Claimed to be John Cale’s final gig with the band, its authenticity has been questioned by fans, with one web site suggesting the tape might be the work of an imaginative Velvets covers band; but the searing 19-minute Sister Ray sounds like the real thing to me.

To some, the interest stirred by the discovery of a 40-year-old recording of a pop concert might seem puzzling. But for those of us with a fascination for rock’s evolution, such recordings are precious relics, offering the invaluable opportunity to listen in on history being made. There’s very few of us who could claim of such epochal gigs, “I was there”; but at least, sometimes, we can better imagine how it must have sounded.

Stevie Chick

  • Live Albums can really weird your idea of what certain songs "should" sound like. On the principle of hits per shekel, the first Jam album I bought was Dig The New Breed, and so I’ve always preferred those versions of The Dreams Of Children and Ghosts. Ditto Joy Division: every time I hear Transmission or Isolation I expect it them at the tempos of the live versions off Still.

  • 1. At Fillmore East - Allman Bros. Band; The live album by which to judge all other live albums, to this day unimpeachable from it's lofty spot at No.1.
    2. Not a specific album but a recorded perfromance; Otis Redding at Monterrey. The tochstone for a million funk bands.
    3. Lotus - Santana.
    4. Delaney & Bonnie and Friends w/Eric Clapton - On The Road; also features an uncredited (by name) George Harrison.
    5. George Harrison & Friends - Concert For Bangla Desh; Live Aid starts here.
    6. Live At Leeds - The Who; showed the uninitiated hitherto unknown heights to where the Who could go. The original edit is definitive. Later expanded issues also show how low live recording can go.
    7. James Brown - At The Apollo. Original volume is a marker. Same comments for the recent Vol.2 as per Live At Leeds.
    8. Live At Georgia Theatre - Derek Trucks Band. A sublime contemporary live recording of sublime musicians playing sublime music. Live recording at the peak of it's craft. Includes a killer 'Freddie's Dead' alone worth the price of admission.
    9. Concert For George.......
    10. Concert For George, natch.

  • Live albums, when recorded under the right conditions with the band in top form, are must haves. The best live albums have always been the ones which have captured an artist or band just as they were reaching their peak or about to go 'massive'! Examples of this would be the afore mentioned 'Live At Leeds'; Elton John's '17 11 70'; Neil Diamond's 'Hot August Night'; Motorhead's 'No Sleep...' and Kiss' 'Alive!'

Here are a few more that are rated very highly round my parts.

AC/DC - If You Want Blood
Tom Petty - Pack Up The Plantation
    Hawkwind - Space Ritual
Deep Purple - Made In Japan
    Bloomfield/Kooper/Stills - Super Session
Marley & The Wailers - Live
Gary Numan - Living Ornaments 79
Whitesnake - Live...In The Heart Of The City
    Santana - Lotus

  • I have to agree with Steve Chick's article. I always found the live album to be an exciting and powerful example of bands doing what they do best. I have many live albums in my collection and when buying an album by a band for the first time, invariably, it would be their live album that I would choose. Here are ten live albums which had a real impact on me over the years (in no particular order):
    1. Live and Dangerous - Thin Lizzy
    2. Rockin' the Filmore - Humble Pie
    3. Live at Filmore East - Allman Brothers

  • Great points you make, Stevie. But what we really need is some new, fresh marketeers who get the kick on the heels of nowadays record company people. And then make work of releasing the real golden bootlegs that have been hidden in the grey are for many years.
So, I'm thinking of the following ten must be releases:
    1. The Rolling Stones: "Brussels Affair" (definitively the best Stones live album ever, Brussels 1973, with devellish versions of Midnight Rambler -fifteen glorious minutes and Rip This Joint, less than two punky minutes)
    2. Bruce Springsteen: any recorded gig of the Darkness tour, so votes go for Winterland, Roxy, Agora or Passaic.
    3. Bob Dylan: the late 1980 gospel shows (half of that stuff being unreleased, traditionals and Hallelujah, the lord himself on the other haof of the tracks)
    4. Neil Young: Tonight's The Night Tour, Manchester 1973. Out there for many years on hissy cds, now the real stuff
    5. Tom Petty: Fillmore East 1997. A nearly four hour journey through Petty's career, including his own basement tapes and a dozen covers being his favourites
    6. Paul Weller: Shepperd's Bush 1996, club show promoting Stanley Road, but most of all showcasing the guts, genius and huge f***ya's to record company idiots.
    7. Lou Reed: Bottom Line, NYC 1983, with the crazy talented late Robert Quine in guitar, Velvet revisited
    8. Oasis: Knebworth and Maine Road 1996, the boys' greatest live hours before they delved into the white swimming pool.
    9. The Clash: Palladium, NYC 1981 Police and fans and... Strummer in between them.
    10. John Cale's Carribean Sunset 1984 tour and forget about the half cooked official Comes Alive album.

  • Live at Leeds and Get yer ya-ya's out should be high on any music lovers top list. My personal favorites would include:

    Complete concerts:
Live Dead and Complete Fillmore West recordings - Grateful Dead (and a few Dick's Picks: most notably February 13/14 and May 2 1970): acid rock composed on the spot
Hampton comes alive - Phish: funky, bluesy, imprvational and funny, they can do it all
Live at Massy Hall - Neil Young: where would we be without vault releases?

    Concerts compiled from various concerts:
Weld - Neil Young: it oozes atmosphere, both in the ballads and in the rockers
Roxy and Elsewhere - Zappa: some of the best musicians playing some of the most coplicated music
Live at the Roxy - Brian Wilson: the most anticipated return to the stage
Live 1975 - Dylan: the album Hard rain should have been
Live at the Fillmore - Derek & the Dominoes: ultimate guitar solo album
Live at Fillmore east - Allman Brothers: the other ultimate guitar solo album, with better singers

  • Without a doubt, the best live album I've ever heard - I still get goose-bumps and the hair on the back of my neck stands on end everytime I play it - is 'Strangers In The Night' from UFO.

Also a good live album that is often overlooked is Grand Funk Railroad's "Live Album", which was also incidentally the very same album I got for my eighth birthday, forever solidifying what would eventually become a life long love affair with rock & roll/heavy metal. Then KISS' 'Alive' took it to a whole other level and it's interesting none of these three were even given honorable mention.

For me, the cool thing about live albums is that in a dark room with your eyes closed, if you try half way hard, you can almost transport yourself there.

    Cheers!

  • Rock and Roll Animal by Lou Reed fits the songs far better than in the studio and contains some great guitar.
Electric Lycanthrope is Little Feat's almost official bootleg and really illustrates what a strength their live performances were.
Hendrix in the West is a blitz and every Richard Thompson live track I have I love. Bob Marley's live music bristles with atmosphere and emotion.
My sister played an Amen Corner live album to death was I was younger which had a strange name something like The National Welsh Live Explosion Company and that didn't put me off.
Good live tracks are always exciting and immediate.

  • "Live" albums can cheat. Consider "Live and Dangerous" by Thin Lizzy, most of which was re-recorded.

  • I've noticed that this thread has been running for a while and nobody has mentioned the still underrated 'king of song noir" WARREN ZEVON one of the top three singer/songwriters of the 20th century.

"Get up an' dance or I'll kill ya. An' I have the means..." Classic Warren.

    7. WARREN ZEVON - LEARNING TO FLINCH

  • Good to see 'Love you live' getting a few mentions - you can really feel the atmosphere, smell the drugs and booze. Another live album that often gets a bit of a slagging is 'David Live', definately my favourite live Bowie. Other top live albums are Quo 'Live' from 77 which has a 16 minute 45 second version of Forty five hundred times, Bruce at Hammersmith, UFO 'strangers in the night' Sammy Hagar 'Live, loud and clear' and Slade 'Alive'. And a couple of the obvious ones would be 'Live at Leeds' and 'Live and dangerous'. My all time winner has to be 'Back to the bars' by Todd Rundgren though.

  • Nice to read about people who have the same view in discovering new and exciting music, even when it's way old....
I started loving live albums when I was a wee heavy metal fan:
    Thin Lizzy - life live
MSG - One night in Budokan
Judas Priest - Unleashed in the east
UFO - Strangers in the night
Rush - Exit stage left (0r any other, I think rush is the only band who actually stuck to the Foghat rule until recently)
Iron Maiden - Live after death

Later on I discovered some brilliant classic rock through live albums

    Jethro Tull - Bursting out
Allman Brothers Band - at Fillmore East
Gov't Mule - at rosewood ballroom
    Wishbone Ash - Stages
    Rory Gallagher - Stage struck

  • My Favorite all time Live record is Live Transmissions From Uranus by Man... Or Astroman? a perfect example of the excitment of that bands shows.

    Other ones I like include:

Humble Pie - Perfomance Rockin the Filmore
The Who - Live at Leeds (I like the full double CD entire concert)
Cheap Trick - Budokan (again the double CD full concert is my fave)
MC5 - Kick out The Jams
    Grand Funk - Live Album

    King Crimson: USA
Jimi Hendrix: At Fillmore East (the extended variant, not Band of Gypsies)
    Genesis: Live
    Uriah Heep: Live
    Gentle Giant: Playing the Fool
    The Band: The Last Waltz
Bob Dylan and the Band: Before the Flood

  • Here's my favorite " live sides".
1)Iggy & The Stooges-"Metallic KO" The last Stooges show from 1974.Raw,sloppy,dangerous.You can hear the audience pelt the stage with bottles, eggs etc while Iggy taunts them and ask for more.
    2)The Decline Of Western Civilization-OST
This where Punk Rock started for me.Great live cuts from Black Flag,Germs,X,Circle Jerks & the ultra funny Fear.
    3)Butthole Surfers-Double Live
The Buttholes "beat the boots" with their own dodgy sounding live album.A bad acid trip never rocked soooo hard
    4)Zappa/Mothers-Fillmore East
    Flo & Eddie era Mothers.Mud Sharks,groupies & Happy Together?!
5)Ministry-In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up
From their New Year's show in Chicago('89-'90).Ferociously slamming.A who's who of the Industrial, punk & metal underground players.
    6)Bobby Conn & The Glass Gypsys-Live Classics Vol 1
Recorded live in an old school '70's recording studio in downtown Chicago.I was one of 50 lucky folks to be at the tapings for this album.Majestic, sick, insane & drunk are the words that come to mind.Do yourself a favor.
    7)The Frogs-CBGayB
Self-released live album.Ripping through their classics "So Right & Natural" & "Racially Yours" albums. And yes, they will play "Freebird" if you ask them.
    8)Grateful Dead-Live/Dead
This era of the Dead sends shivers down my spine."Dark Star" & St. Stephens are here.
    9)The Ramones-It's Alive
Last time I heard this,I was pissed and dancing around in a kiddie pool.
    10)Black Flag-Live 1984
Special mention goes to Bill Stevenson & Kira Roessler. The best damn rhythm section in the world.
