Wreckless Eric on Marvin Gaye’s Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)
Marvin Gaye
Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)
(Tamla 7-inch, 1971)
Wreckless Eric: “It’s just got a great groove. It has this great bass line and it’s a strange thing: it has that hysteria of inner city life but it also has this great calm about it somehow. I have the *What’s Going On album, but it’s always the 45 I turn to. The album is overwhelming, whereas that single always directly spoke to me. It’s the most un-ritzy Motown single, a lot of Motown was very showbiz, but this isn’t. It’s not just my favourite Motown record but one of my all time favourite records.”
Read great pieces about the 100 Greatest Motown Songs in this month’s MOJO magazine.
