David 'Fathead' Newman, jazz saxophonist and one of the key members of the Ray Charles Band, died last week at the age of 75.
Born in Texas in 1933, Newman gained his nickname at Dallas's Lincoln High School after a teacher noticed he was reading his music upside down. Newman met Ray Charles in 1954, remaining in his band for the next twelve years. An album, Fathead: Ray Charles Presents David Newman, was released in 1959. His final album Diamondhead was released last year.
He's survived by his wife and manager Karen, four sons, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Animal Collective's current album, Merryweather Post Pavilion (4 stars, MOJO 182), is on course to become one of the key releases of 2009. The Baltimore psych collective have now released a video to accompany the grand dreamscapes of latest single My Girls. Here's your chance to join the ride. Dive in below.
My Girls
White Lies, purveyors of epic indie and one of MOJO's 9 for '09 picks, will play a series of UK dates in May. Their debut album, To Lose My Life, is currently sitting at Number 1 in British charts.
The band will play:
Leeds Cockpit (May 3)
Glasgow QMU (4)
Manchester Academy 2 (5)
London Heaven (7, 8)
Support comes from another of MOJO's new favourites School Of Seven Bells.
And finally...Happy Birthday Nick Mason! Pink Floyd's automobile-loving sticksman is 64 today. Here he is showing off his psychedelic threads in the summer of 1967.
See Emily Play
