Mick Harvey, one of the founders of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, has left the band.
“For a variety of personal and professional reasons I have chosen to discontinue my ongoing involvement with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds,” said the multi-instrumentalist in a statement released earlier today. “After 25 years I feel I am leaving the band as it experiences one of its many peaks; in very healthy condition, and with fantastic prospects for the future.”
Harvey followed singer Nick Cave into the Bad Seeds in 1983. Previously, he had formed The Boys Next Door – soon to be known as The Birthday Party – after meeting Cave and drummer Phil Calvert at school in Melbourne. He played his last gig with the band in Sydney on January 18.
"It was a fantastic experience to finish my touring days in the band with the recent shows in Australia and the unique events that took place in conjunction with All Tomorrow's Parties, especially Mt Buller, which was one of the many highlights of my involvement with the band throughout the years," he added.
Harvey's involvement with the upcoming reissues of the band's back catalogue will continue as planned.

I was at what now apparently Mick Harvey's final concert with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. (Perth, Western Australia - Belvoir Ampitheatre, January 20.) It was a magnificent gig, with Nick and the lads in fiery form, peaking on towering versions of The Mercy Seat, Tupelo and Stagger Lee. Nick's audience banter was particularly amusing. He seems to get funnier every time I see him.
I'm sure the Bad Seeds will continue to evolve and to produce brilliant music, but I'm equally certain that they won't ever be quite the same without Mick. His contributions to one of the great bands of the last 25 years deserves wider recognition. God Bless, Mick. Cheers for the memories.

RE: Mike
After getting into Mick Harvey's solo stuff and his contributions to the HUGELY underated Crime and the City Solution, I concur. Let's face it. Blixa was the 'musical director' of the Seeds before Warren came along and the tension between him and Mick is no doubt a big part of this latest change.
