Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
(MUTE CD STUMM 277, 2008)

Cave described this most recent Bad Seeds LP as a “haemorrhaging of words and ideas”. He wasn’t joking. The lyrics touch on Homer, panda blood and “the weeping Forests of Le Vulva”. This free-range lyricism also takes in Bobby Gillespie and the poet John Berryman. If Bobby represents wired rock adventurism and Berryman refined literacy, it’s a pairing that equals this album’s own astonishing blend - blasted abandon plus deftly measured musical sophistication. It’s all at once avant-garde and traditional, visceral and cerebral. Alongside Lazarus, the rock form quivers startlingly back to life.

Am I the only person who feels this and Nocturama are Nick's weakest albums? It's like the press have just awoken to his genius, grabbed the latest work and universally heaped praise on it. I don't get it!
