There are no outright disasters in the Bad Seeds back catalogue. But it’s generally accepted the 2003 album Nocturama is their least distinguished. The fathomlessly wry tone of the The Boatman’s Call was occasionally over-mined - as on the Mediterranean metaphors of Rock Of Gibraltar. Bring It On - featuring The Saints’ Chris Bailey - somewhat suggests Russell Crowe and pals getting lairy round the barbie. Also, the 1992 Bad Seeds album Henry’s Dream isn’t hugely loved by its creators. And, next to The Birthday Party’s infernal reality, their first LP, Prayers On Fire, has awkward moments of juvenilia.

Thumbs down for the knock on Henry's Dream. The band dismissed it because of the production: the songs are like Faulkner mumbling to himself during a bathtub gin hangover. "John Finn's Wife", "I Had a Dream, Joe", "Jack the Ripper" ... just listen to Live Seeds if you don't like the production, and hear Nick Cave rip into Papa Won't Leave You, Henry as if his life HAD depended on it.

I think that any Nick Cave/ Warren Ellis movie soundtracks should be avoided, but not Henry's Dream or Nocturama. I do listen to the soundtracks late at night, and so should anyone with insomnia. They will put you right to sleep. Nocturama had the hit song "Bring It On", along other great hits, none of which were played on the last tour :( And Henry's Dream was a great album, except for the song "Christina the Astonishing". And as for the top ten list, it's missing "No More Shall We Part", which has "As I Sat Sadly By Here Side", which I believe has the greatest piano sound ever on the 10" vinyl version.

I don't know if the soundtrack should be avoided. Soundtrack are always tedious, but The Rider Song #3 on the Proposition might be one of Cave's best songs.

I and don't get why Mojo thinks Nocturama should be avoided. He Wants You and Right Out Of Your Hand to mention some, are amazing. I think it's his best album overall. There Is A Town is a bit boring though.

The Boatman's Call is Nick's best album.

BS.... Grinderman and the birthday party are some of the things I listen to the least, but these albums mentioned that are supposedly best avoided.. they are some of the best albums I`ve ever heard in my life. And Rock of gibraltar is the most beatiful song ever! *aaa* *Demolishing room in a fit of rage*
