IGGY POP HAS responded to news of bandmate Ron Asheton’s death. “I am in shock,” notes the Stooges singer. “He was my best friend.”
A statement attributed to “the Stooges, Management and Crew” is slightly more fulsome. It runs...
“We are shocked and shaken by the news of Ron’s death. He was a great friend, brother, musician, trooper. Irreplaceable. He will be missed.
“For all that knew him behind the façade of Mr Cool & Quirky, he was a kind-hearted, genuine, warm person who always believed that people meant well even if they did not.
“As a musician Ron was The Guitar God, idol to follow and inspire others. That is how he will be remembered by people who had a great pleasure to work with him, learn from him and share good and bad times with him.”
Iggy, Scott, Steve, Mike and Crew.

R.I.P. & God Speed, Sir. You will be greatly missed.
Ron Ashton was a one of a kind guitarist and while that term is tossed around way too much, Ashton was really one of a kind. Extremely underrated and only because of the band he was in which was never going to be a media darling and that was fine by me. Sort of made feel like the Stooges were all mine, that no one else knew about them.
He had such a refreshing view of the guitar but once Eddie Van Halen came onto the scene, it was all over for many great guitarists who were neiter flashy nor garish in their approach to the instrument.
Ever since I heard he died, I've been playing all my Stooges records non-stop. Damnit!! I was really looking forward to hopefully seeing them live and hearing more new music coming from the Stooges now that they got back together.
'Tis a very sad day in the world of music...
