He appeared on record with The Beatles and counted the Stones, Marianne Faithfull, Nico, The Byrds, Love and a coterie of other '60s superstars as some of his closest friends, but who exactly is the mysterious Prince Stash?
In a new Radio 4 documentary, premiering tomorrow (Feb 3), MOJO's Mark Paytress travels to an isolated 15th century castle in the Italian hills to meet the "playboy prince" who got busted with Brian Jones, stoned with Syd Barrett and traversed swinging London wearing "antique lace shirts, period waistcoats and capes". Would you expect anything less from a man who has strong family connections to Lord Byron and whose full name is Prince Stanislaus Klossowski De Rola?
“I've interviewed hundreds of musicians and cultural movers and shakers since the mid-’80s," says Paytress. "But few if any retain the mystique of Prince Stash. He is perhaps the greatest icon pop never quite had.” With contributions from The Pretty Things' Phil May and Chris 'brother of Mick' Jagger, all is set to be revealed...
Stash: The Dandy Aesthete Of Swinging London will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 tomorrow morning (Feb 3) at 11:30am. Listen to it HERE.

I listened to the programme and thought it was a pity that Mark Paytress chose to criticise Stash for making a pass at his producer. He said it was "unnecessary". Isn't that a bit puritanical?
