John & Yoko Unseen!

"I WAS ALWAYS fascinated by extraordinary people doing extraordinary things," says Henry Pessar, discussing a career that now spans over four decades and during which he has written about and photographed everybody from Bob Dylan to Mike Tyson, Richard Burton and James Stewart.

Paris-born Pessar originally studied languages before managing an art gallery in the French capital. By the mid-'60s he'd become a freelance journalist and photographer, his work appearing in the daily France-Soir, then a wider network of worldwide publications that included Time, Stern, Holà, Paris-Match and The Daily Express.

Having befriended The Beatles in 1965, he travelled with them further in '66. When John Lennon returned to Paris in March 1969 with his future wife Yoko Ono, Pessar was also on hand to act as their guide while documenting their sojourn in a warm and humanising manner.

Following the couple's wedding in Gibraltar, Henry accompanied John and Yoko to Amsterdam where they celebrated their honeymoon by staging their first bed-in at the Hilton. There, the ever-dogged Pessar conducted an interview with Yoko that revealed just what it was like to marry a Beatle.

The current issue of MOJO magazine celebrates John and Yoko's 40th Wedding Anniversary and features Henry Pessar's full interview with Yoko Ono, alongside exclusive shots of the couple's meeting with Salvador Dali and a whole lot more across a 15-page cover story.

Here, however, MOJO is proud to present an exclusive selection of photographs - many of which have hitherto been unseen - shot by Henry Pessar during that fateful two-week period in March 1969.
