One was a southern rock hedonist with a relentless appetite for drugs; the other the lissom half of a '60s pop pairing whose marriage had recently dissolved. Cherilyn Sarkisian married Gregg Lenoir Allman in Las Vegas on June 30, 1975 - three days after her divorce from Sonny Bono was finalised. A mere 10 days later, Cher decided she'd had enough of Allman's chemically-drenched lifestyle and promptly consulted her lawyers once again. Has there ever been a more explosive start to a rock coupling? Recalling the moment when she informed her whacked-out husband that the marriage was over, Cher admitted: "He was so high he didn't even understand me." Allman managed to temporarily clean up and within a month they were back together. A son, Elijah Blue Allman, was born in 1976, halting yet more divorce proceedings (this time kickstarted by Allman), but the daily insanity of booze-overload and superstar hounding proved too much - not to mention Cher's brief return to her ex-husband in the form of a re-booted Sonny & Cher TV show. It wasn't even working musically - their collaborative efforts on 1977's execrable Two The Hard Way proof that no matter how bushy Gregg grew his mutton-chops, the game was up. They divorced in 1979. In the 60's before Duane and Gregg formed the Allman Brothers Band they were in L.A. in a band they called Hourglass. It released an album. They played all the LA hotspots and, sitting at a table they saw Cher come in. Gregg commented on her beauty and Duane said "Little brother, I hope you have a woman that beautiful some day." The rest is history.
