MOJO's Rock Couples #12

11:41 AM GMT 24/03/2009

Together since 1980 when the pair first formed the band that would become Sonic Youth, Kim and Thurston are without a doubt rock's coolest power couple. Well, Kim is cool; Thurston is the first to admit he got lucky when Kim, already moving and shaking on New York's avant-garde art scene started dating the gauche college boy who'd recently arrived in New York City. "Believe me, she was unbelievable when I first met her," Thurston told Rolling Stone. "She wore this sort of hip prison-stripe outfit and flip-up shades on her glasses... and I thought, That's the coolest fucking person I've ever met. Then she became my girlfriend, which was beyond cool because that never really happened to me before."

But happen it did and the pair married in 1984. By the end of that decade Sonic Youth had released five albums, including the secular trinity of Evol ('86), Sister ('87) and Daydream Nation ('88), three albums that shifted the parameters of guitar rock and still shine down the decades, lighting the way for groups like Nirvana to follow. In 1994 they had a daughter, Coco, who considers her parents cool enough to occasionally appear on TV with them ( at 6 mins 26). Kim and Thurston have recorded together for almost three decades and remain both the heart of a great band and the soul of the US underground; tireless patrons, label bosses, curators and an all-round inspirations. • c'mon people! these may seem more obvious than some of the selections that were made, but if you're naming the best rock couples of all time it's a close race between john lennon/yoko ono and elvis/priscilla presley.
