Dream Of Life, the album Fred 'Sonic' Smith and Patti Smith made together in 1988 also provides the name of a 2009 Patti Smith documentary, its title taking on a cruel new resonance in reference to the period of her life from the mid-'90s when she lost not only her husband, MC5 guitarist Fred but her friends and collaborators Richard Sohl and Robert Mapplethorpe and her brother Todd, all in quick succession. Smith P. first met Smith F. at a party in Detroit while touring her Radio Ethiopia album in 1976. Their slowburning relationship (Fred was married when they met) became official in 1978 and they married in 1980. The couple had a son, Jackson and a daughter, Jesse, who was born during the making of Dream Of Life (People Have The Power indeed).

The film shows Patti Smith as an artist, poet and activist but is perhaps most revealing when she's reflecting on their family life, in all its messy, wonderful, painful detail. Fred's death from heart failure at just 45 left an indelible mark and led to Patti's decade-long absence from rock'n'roll, until Bob Dylan himself coaxed her back out on tour in 1995. She recorded Gone Again, her magnificent tribute to Fred, love and loss, the following year. [JB]
