Street Rock's Greatest Flicks!

5:09 PM GMT 26/03/2009

IN TRIBUTE TO this month's MOJO free CD - All The Young Dudes - and to the against-all-odds revivification of old-school, balls-out rock'n'roll pinups Mott The Hoople, MOJO Editor-in-Chief Phil Alexander presents two fistfuls of YouTube bovveration. From T.Rex to Slade and beyond, here's a punchy bunch of streetwise songsmiths utterly at odds with the bloated self-indulgence so often associated with '70s rock. Rock on!

1. T.Rex - Buick Mackane

Shit! It's an armed robbery at the riff factory, as Bolan and dandy hooligan chums lay into one of their toughest numbers. Kudos if you can explain the point of Mickey Finn's congas.

2. Motörhead - Leaving Here

Great swarf-gargling and speed-aggro from the ultimate inheritors of street-nasty UK rock.

3. Larry Wallis - Police Car

After their '74 split, Mott's route-one rock agenda remained alive in the pub rock sphere. Enjoy Nick Lowe's double-neck.

4. Mott The Hoople - Roll Away The Stone

The original and best! Dig those "dollybird" backing singers! And Ariel Bender's hat!

5. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Midnight Moses

Glasgow genius gives it some art-bovver. YouTube commenter "quantise" has it spot on: "This absolutely blew my nuts off. Look at that audience... they are in shock."

6. Slade - How Does It Feel

Because even hooligans get the blues.

7. Be Bop Deluxe - Sister Seagull

A bit sophisticated in this company? At least that's what Bill Nelson's white tuxedo is saying...

8. The Move - California Man

No-frills proto-Wizzard rock-ola from Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Brummie sons of the sod.

  • Can anyone confirm that the Move's "California Man" is about or was inspired by legendary venue the California Ballroom in Dunstable, Beds?
