50 Years Of Island Records

5:00 PM GMT 28/04/2009

IT'S RARE FOR MOJO to honour a record label. But then, Island is a rare sort of record label. Over the 50 years of its existence it's released the best folk, prog, pop, rock and reggae, fostering a collegiate label vibe and a stamp-of-quality status that has survived changing fashions and commercial trends.

Stir in its satellite labels - Sue, Mango, Antilles, ZE and Fourth & Broadway - and you're talking a practically unrivalled spread of cutting-edge musical interests, from Amazing Blondel to Amy Winehouse, via N.W.A. and The Contortions.

Helping prove that there's more to Island than that Bob Marley, the latest issue of MOJO magazine delivers 30 pages of Island-connected fun, and we're joining in at MOJO4music with a quartet of online exclusives.

Island boss Chris Blackwell remembers Island's folk genius, Nick Drake.

Island folk's greatest flicks. Bucolic beauty and mad minstrel mayhem in our video playlist.

Chris Blackwell picks his three favourite Island albums. You're invited to join him.

Sly Dunbar on how Island's house band changed reggae.

The latest MOJO magazine is out now.

  • Look, why don't you just go back to the Word website with your fellow "intelligent life." I'll take a magazine that dedicates itself 100% to music. It's what I wanna read and listen to, so that's what I buy. Don't like it? Tough shit.

I will take this opportunity to knock MOJO down a peg. There's TOO much wrong with your top 50 list.

Another Green World at 22?! Kimono My House at 18?! And where is Jah Wobble's Take Me To God? That deserves some sort of place.

As good as the Nirvana track you provided on another fine free CD was, you might be holding Simon Simopath on too high a pedestal. I mean, #1?!! C'mon! Don't be ridiculous.

    Otherwise, fine issue as always.
