The genius of Britain's original guitar hooligan. By Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry.
Joe Perry: "The first time I ever saw Beck live was when I was 17. The Jeff Beck Group played at the Boston Tea Party and I remember the band walked through the crowd carrying their instruments to the stage. Jeff plugged into these huge amps and I was blown away. He was playing blues but his take on it was totally different to what I'd heard before. Plus he was really flash and he knew all the tricks. He had a sense of humour about his playing; it was like he would thumb his nose at you by playing certain notes.
"I remember waiting around afterwards and Jeff came down walking on his own with his Les Paul case in his hand. I stopped him and said, 'I just gotta shake your hand, you are the best!' He just nodded said thanks and walked on. The next day I decided I was going to buy a Les Paul. It was the first time I had seen anybody play one."
