Ornette Coleman, free jazz pioneer and legend of the saxophone, will curate the 16th Meltdown Festival in June (13 to 21).
The line-up for the nine-day London event has just been announced and will feature the likes of Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band, Patti Smith, Moby and Robert Wyatt.
The artists confirmed so far are: Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band, Sean Lennon, Cornelius, The Master Musicians of Joujouka and Bachir Attar, Patti Smith, The Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra, David Murray, Gwo-Ka Masters, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Baaba Maal, Yo La Tengo, Moby, Bobby McFerrin, Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, Carla Bley, Robert Wyatt and The Bad Plus.
Yoko Ono, whose Plastic Ono Band will play their first UK show at the festival, said: "I am thrilled to be asked to perform at Meltdown and especially excited to play the first ever UK show as Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band. It will also be fantastic to work with Ornette again."
Glenn Max, Producer of Contemporary Culture at Southbank Centre, added: "People may be surprised to see what's in this box of musical delights that is Ornette Coleman's Meltdown, but that is only to be expected from an artist who has surprised, shocked and confounded throughout his long career. While some may want to claim him as a jazz artist, Ornette has spent his life trying to break down such rigid definitions and, 50 years on, we have at least two generations of musicians deeply inspired by him. It is Ornette's persistence of vision, and his dogged ability to thrive creatively while faced with incomprehension that has made him a legend in the minds of the originators lined up to play this festival, one of the boldest Meltdown line-ups we've ever assembled",
Coleman and his band (Al MacDowell - electric bass, Tony Falanga - acoustic bass, Denardo Coleman - drums) will take the stage at the Royal Festival Hall on Friday, June 19 (Reflections of Jazz To Come) and Sunday, June 21 (Reflections of This is Our Music).
Tickets go on sale to Southbank Centre Members at 10am on Wednesday, April 29. The general sale opens at 10am on Thursday, April 30.

My June would never dream of using such filthy words, although she does like it up

There's nothing I like better after worming the cat than sitting down and putting on my Yoko Ono and Bobby McFerrin albums.
Bliss.

Um... did everyone get that? Dirty Di-ckhead never heard of Susan Boyle. I plead ignorance in her case. What's that condition when you can't stop swearing? Tourett's. Yah. Poor thing.

Hey Dirty Di, I'm in such a good mood today I won't insult you. I got signed! Yes, "Nim Portekoy"'s not my Jane Name either. Like everyone else in the fuckin world, I have a band an a CD out soon. Hint for future reference: I knew Patti Smith's hero William Burroughs. Oh, and during a wild affair, Kathy Acker declared me a sex maniac.

Actually, I Googled Bobby McFerrin. I didn't know HE did "Don't Worry Be Happy". He should be shot. And Moby I'd throttle meself. But I do envy you, Dirty Di - I'd love to see The Master Musicians of Joujouka and Robert Wyatt.
I saw Patti Smith at CBGB's in 1979, crawling on the stage floor moaning crap self-indulgent shite she could pass off as "poetry" to the gaggle of her fervent admiresses - all lanky post-hippie librarians with long stringy hair and flat chests. I stayed glued to the pinball machine in back, swigging at a Rolling Rock.
