The Beatles Remastered!

THE BEATLES BACK CATALOGUE has been digitally remastered and is due for release on September 9, 2009. This brace of reissues will coincide with the launch of The Beatles: Rock Band video game.

Each album will feature the original UK artwork, expanded sleevenotes and rare photos. For a limited period, each CD will also be embedded with a brief documentary film about the making of the album. On the same date, two new Beatles box sets will also be released.

As MOJO reported in our White Album Anniversary issue, the albums were remastered at Abbey Road Studios over a four year period.

In addition to the 12 original Beatles albums and Magical Mystery Tour, Past Masters Vol. I and II (the 1988 B-side/alternate version compilations) have been collated into a single title. This is also the first time the Fab's first four LPs (Please Please Me, With The Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, Beatles For Sale) will be available in stereo CD format. These 14 albums, along with a DVD collection of the documentaries, will also be available for purchase together in a box set.

The Beatles in Mono, a second collection, will gather all of the band's recordings in their original mono mixes. It is set to feature 10 of the band's albums and a further two discs in the Past Masters mould. The mono Help! and Rubber Soul reissues will also include the original 1965 stereo mixes (not been previously released on CD). All will appear in mini-vinyl CD replicas complete with original sleeves, inserts and label designs.

  • Great! (this is going to be an expensive september) I just hope the new remasters keep the little original imperfections intact: the very brief drop-out of sound in the rythm guitar track on Day tripper, the unidentified voice on Chains, etc...
    Can't wait.

  • I hope to God that the horrible stereo positioning of the 1987 CDs have been consigned to the dustbin: i can't stand those vocals-on-one-side, backing-track-on-the-other mixes! Please centre the vocals!

I also hope all the hard work put in by the engineers at Abbey Road over the last four years isn't ruined by the usual 'lets turn everything up & push it all the way to the front" brickwall mastering when the albums go to CD.

And finally... would it really have been so hard for EMI to have issued each album as 2 CD sets with the mono mixes on disc 2? Those box sets will no doubt cost a bomb... (then again, The Beatles are just about the last cash-cow EMI has left, so no surprises there).

Other than those potential gripes, i can't wait! It's about bloody time, Apple!

  • September 9, the day before my birthday! (hint, hint). Actually what I would like is vinyl versions of the mono mixes, having got all the stereo albums. Will there be vinyl pressings?

  • This is great news, although there are two small sticking points. One is that they're being released on CD, which is lower resolution than the vinyl they were originally pressed on and subsequent improvements on CD, such as Super Audio CD, DVD and Blu-Ray. If it weren't for the obvious commercial drawback to doing this, they'd give us high-res now. As it is, we'll probably have to wait another 10-20 years. Also, they haven't remixed the records and the stereo version of Sgt. Pepper, for example, should be based on the mono. The mono version is really the version everyone should have because it's what the Beatles intended you to hear, but as people prefer stereo they listen to the more conservative mix by Martin.

Any chance of the Hollywood Bowl on cd?
And while we are at it where is Let It Be and Magical Mystery tour on dvd?

  • RE: David Huret

Yes but the dropout in 'Day Tripper' was fixed for the '1' album.

  • Looking for to these, but were are the missing nine tracks from Past Masters 1?

    1. Long Tall Sally
    2. I Call Your Name
    3. Slow Down
    4. Matchbox
    5. I Feel Fine
    6. She's a Woman
    7. Bad Boy
    8. Yes It Is
    9. I'm Down

Is it something to do with the date?

  • RE: James de Beresford
These releases are being marketed as 'Re-mastered' - hardly 4 weeks work let alone 4 years. I suspect they have actually been remixed - microphone pops, tape hiss, talking etc have apparently been removed and playing errors doctored by flying in notes sampled elsewhwere on the song.I have no problem with this. The technology would have been used if it had been available. 'Love' and 'Let it Be...naked' sound stunning.
