NEWS DIGEST THURSDAY MAY 21

A poem submitted by a teenage Bob Dylan to his summer camp newspaper has been revealed as a reworking of a lyric by country singer Hank Snow.

Until today, Christies auction house were proudly displaying Little Buddy as a signifier of the young Dylan's lyrical prowess with a guide price estimate of $15,000.

"It's a very early example of his brilliance," Simeon Lipman, Christies' pop culture specialist erroneously declared. "It comes from the mind of a teenager [with] some very interesting thoughts kind of percolating in his brain."

While this may be true, it now transpires these particular thoughts weren't Dylan's own. As one eagle-eyed fan pointed out on Dylan fansite Expecting Rain, Little Buddy is in fact a song by Canadian country singer Hank 'The Yodelling Ranger' Snow, which the young Bobby Zimmerman pinched and signed off as his own.

Born in Nova Scotia, Snow was beloved of Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. Little Buddy was released as a 78 RPM on RCA Invicta in 1948. Listen to Snow's original here.

Unperturbed, Christies are still auctioning the item and have not adjusted the bidding price. "The words are in fact a revised version of lyrics of a Hank Snow song," reads the amended lot description. "This still remains among the earliest known handwritten lyrics of Bob Dylan and Christie's is pleased to offer them in our Pop Culture auction."

The Primitives bassist Steve Dullaghan was killed by smoking too much cannabis, a toxicology report has concluded.

Dullaghan, 45, was found dead at his home in Coventry on February 4. Dr Steve Ferryman, pathologist at University Hospital Coventry, said in his report: "He possibly experienced one of the toxic effects of cannabis - a fast heart rate and hyperventilating - and this can lead to heart failure."

Coventry coroner Sean McGovern has recorded a verdict of death due to misuse of drugs.

Ash have announced they will release 26 singles in one year. The 'A-Z Series' begins in September and will see the trio release a single every fortnight.

"We wanted to be the first people to do it like this," said frontman Tim Wheeler. "This is a time when you can try new ideas and it can work."

Wheeler announced in 2007 that Ash would no longer be releasing conventional albums.

"There's a great Andy Warhol quote about how waiting for something makes it more exciting," he said of the new project. "I think it'll be great for our fans waiting every two weeks knowing they're going to get a song and wondering what it'll be like. It'll be fun."

And finally... a very happy birthday to My Bloody Valentine's white noise maestro Kevin Shields who turns 46 today. Here's a bizarre clip of Kevin talking to Nation Of Ulysses frontman Ian Svenonius in an East London pub...
