Off The Wall
(Epic, 1979)
The album that became a template for black American pop for the rest of the century. Producer Quincy Jones, who'd worked with Jackson on The Wiz soundtrack, created a sophisticated blend of light funk and catchy pop (thanks to British writer Rod Temperton and Jackson's own pen) in rich rhythm arrangements with apt (and synthesized) string-and-horn colouring. Every home should have one.
