HIStory
(Epic, 1995)
2-CD set, one a 'best of' the Epic years the other a set of 15 new songs. We are in the presence of a grand scheme here from a Notorious B.I.G. rap and Durufle's Pie Jesus to the Great Gate Of Kiev movement from Modeste Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition and duet with sister Janet. The album's opening mood of anger and indignation by the end becomes mawkish - it finishes with Charlie Chaplin's Smile. Ambition is not a bad thing, but over the spread of a long CD, he loses focus.
