MOJO Britpop Special On Sale June 10!

3:38 PM GMT 05/06/2009

MOJO CLASSICS' Britpop Special - featuring the stories behind all the top Britpop bands, all-new interviews, unseen pics, and your guide to the 60 finest '90s albums - goes on sale June 10.

Grab one at your trusted local newsagent or order it from our special hotline on 01858 438 806.

It features all the Britpop greats, including Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Paul Weller, Elastica, plus the crazy crash-and-burn antics of Menswear, Shed Seven, Gene and many more.

In an exclusive interview, Graham Coxon tells the rollercoaster tale of Blur's addled decade, and imparts the following salutary ruminations on fame...

"My idea of success in a group is [based on] what I saw on The Who's film The Kids Are Alright: an awful lot of heroic playing and some extremely funny gags. What you don't see in that film is the agony that Keith Moon is going through, and what he's putting everyone else through. You don't see how real, brutal and fucking horrible alcohol addiction is, then you finally realise that it's got its claws into you. It's a cold, hard, horrible feeling. It's too late when you know it. And, in that way, then the party's over."

And on Blur's break-up and re-formation...

"I think we just needed a rest, a break from each other. There wasn't a big, slam-bam argument in the studio or anything. When Damon and I met up again, I said, Sorry about this and that, I obviously upset you. He was like, "Huh?" (sighs), and he was instantly bored by me saying anything about that. It was just apparent that everything we thought may have been there was just cobwebs, nothing, it didn't exist. More was said in the press about what happened than there actually was. There was no split lips. We went home for the weekend and didn't come back. A bit like [Parklife song] Tracy Jacks!"

And, if you ever wondered who the George Best looky-likey was pogo'ing naked on stage with Elastica at Glastonbury in 1995, and why he did it, then read the mind-bending recollections of ace Britpop ligger Anthony Genn, now lead singer of The Hours.

Of his nude on-stage exuberance, Genn recalls: "I had taken a lovely little cocktail of ecstacy, cocaine, LSD, weed, heroin and lots of Strongbow cider."

For more startling revelations, including the truth about Jarvis vs Jacko and the current whereabouts of Sonya Echobelly, check it out. It looks a bit like this...

  • Outside of Britland, no one gives a shit about Britpop. It's about time someone wised you up.

  • Blur is a brilliant band and as the saying goes "print the legend". For now let's get back to the music.

  • Looking forward to this one. I hope there's coverage of more bands besides Blur & Oasis. A lot of middle tier Britpop bands never received much exposure in Australia and I'd love to know what's worth tracking down.

  • I had so much fun in the 90's, and most of it comes down to the great music around during that time. Not just Britpop: (pulp, Suede, Blur, Oasis), but a bit of American music too: (Beck, , Nirvana, Breeders, Pumpkins).

I will buy this Mojo Classic.

    now...where's the DeLorean?

  • RE: Cowtools

Check out Marion. Their first album, "This World and Body" was a classic. Bit of hype about them when they first appeared, tailed off a bit as Oasis, Blur, Pulp etc went massive
