The 20 Greatest Dylan Songs!? #3

...SEE NUMBER 2

3. Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands
(Blonde On Blonde, 1966)

Eleven minutes-plus of serpentine psychodrama. Like jazz and Byron, it goes on and on and on.

Al Kooper (Dylan sideman, philosopher): "To me, this is the definitive version of what 4am sounds like. Using simple chords in deceptively new patterns, he wove his tale - a ballad fer chrissakes - for over 11 minutes, but I defy you to stop in the middle to answer the phone, check the ball scores or use the restroom. It's just downright riveting: that voice and harmonica, the intricacies of musicians who had previously laboured for the likes of George Jones and Tammy Wynette suddenly challenged to provide musical sets for a play they'd never seen or heard before, and rising to the occasion with a bravado I had never witnessed before in all my years as a studio musician in New York City."
