("Love And Theft", 2001)
Late masterpiece gathering the trials and solaces of life under one stoic gaze.
Time Out Of Mind producer Daniel Lanois had suggested this song should sound "sexy, sexy, and more sexy". But Dylan was concerned to do justice to "knifelike lyrics trying to convey majesty and heroism". The result, when finally committed to "Love And Theft", is this aptly sedimentary flow of defeat, romance, loneliness and even some hope ("Things should start to get interesting, right about now") wrapped up in a sighing melody. Ample ammunition against anyone who says he doesn't write 'em like he used to. Also check out the three "sexier" versions on Tell Tale Signs.
