The Ultimate Collection
(Motown, 1996)
Of course, 1972's Greatest Hits was the best single J5 vinyl you could buy back in the day and this is the current equivalent. Twenty-one tracks, all the hits plus four from Michael solo (Got To Be There, Rockin' Robin, I Wanna Be Where You Are, Just A Little Bit Of You), Jermaine's Daddy's Home and a 1995 remix of their version of the Isleys It's Your Thing. The five other Jackson 5 albums - Lookin' Through The Windows (1972), Skywriter and Get It Together (both 1973), Dancing Machine (1974), Moving Violation (1975) - released while the group were still on Motown show increasing disaffection between label and act, who wanted more say in their material, production and direction. The moneyed may prefer Soulsation! (1995) is a 4-CD box set, the final CD of which is "rare and unreleased" material, plus a generous David Ritz-penned booklet.
