In 1975, Andy Warhol made a cassette recording of John Phillips' Man On The Moon musical. The Pop Art guru taped the off-Broadway show from the front row of the audience. It remains the only known recording of the fully orchestrated performance.
Now, the tapes are set to re-emerge after Grammy award- winning restoration engineers Steve Rosenthal and Warren Russell-Smith completed their work earlier this year. The new 38-track package, Andy Warhol Presents Man On The Moon: The John Phillips Space Musical, will include all the restored recordings as well as a batch of the musical's songs performed on acoustic guitar by The Mama's And The Papa's founder.

George Russell, the jazz composer and theorist, has died in Boston at the age of 86. It is understood he was suffering from Alzheimer's.
Born in Cincinnati in 1923, Russell began his musical career by playing drums in Benny Carter's band before composing the likes of Cubano Be/Cubano Bop for Dizzy Gillespie. The piece premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1947 and is credited as being the first meld of Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz. In 1953, he published The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization, which quickly influenced such jazz giants as Bill Evans and Miles Davis. It remains a key theory text to this day.
Russell is survived by his wife, son and three grandchildren.
