Willy DeVille, founder of CBGB's punk legends Mink DeVille, has died in New York following a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 58.

Having formed Mink DeVille in San Francisco, DeVille became a regular at CBGB's throughout the mid-1970s splicing Latin and Cajun influences with New York's gritty punk sound to form a unique blend of tough R&B.

In 1977, the band teamed up with producer Jack Nitzsche to record Cabretta. The album would deliver two minor hits in the form of Spanish Stroll and Cadillac Walk.

His song, Storybook Love, became the theme for hit movie The Princess Bride, earning DeVille an Oscar nomination in 1987.

He is survived by his third wife Nina, his son Sean and his sister Mimi.

A full obituary will appear in a future issue of MOJO.

Abbey Road, released on September 26, 1969, went on to become the band's most successful LP. The original cover photograph was taken by Iain Macmillan on August 8, 1969.

Head over to the BBC to watch all the action.
