JIMMY COBB PLAYED DRUMS on what most sane critics rate among the top 5 pieces of popular music ever recorded, Miles Davis's Kind Of Blue. The only surviving member of that legendary band, he brings a crack group of contemporary jazzers to London's Tower Festival on September 17 to play versions of Kind Of Blue's five masterpieces - So What, Freddie Freeloader, Blue In Green, All Blues, and Flamenco Sketches - plus other classics by Davis, John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. Support comes from UK Jazz legend Courtney Pine.
Not only could you be one of five lucky winners of a full-price pair of tickets to the event, but you could also walk away with a 2CD+DVD Legacy Edition of Kind Of Blue, which features alternate takes, a 17-minute live performance of So What and a DVD documentary featuring interviews with Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderly, Herbie Hancock, Bill Cosby and Carlos Santana.
And to seal the deal, a copy of Richard Williams' magnificent book on the Kind Of Blue session, its stars and its undercurrents: The Blue Moment.
To be in with a chance of being one of our lucky handful, jump over here to answer to the following question...
Who among the following did NOT play on Kind Of Blue?
a. Wynton Kelly
b. Paul Chambers
c. Ornette Coleman
Competition closes on August 24. Book and CD are to be collected at the concert.
Oh, and if you never win anything, but can't bear to miss out, you can buy the whole package for £80 (RRP £120) from www.towerfestival.com.
