Courtney Love's dismay at the current Guitar Hero representation of Kurt Cobain has erupted into a mammoth rant posted on her Twitter page.
The controversy began last month after it was revealed that Love had provided Activision, the game's creators, with a written statement agreeing that Cobain's image could be used in the finished product. Nirvana's Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic then signed off on the use of two tracks (Smells Like Teen Spirit and Lithium), unaware that the Kurt character could be used to play and sing songs by other artists.
"While we were aware of Kurt's image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn't know players have the ability to unlock the character," said Grohl and Novoselic. "This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants. We urge Activision to do the right thing in 're-locking' Kurt's character so that this won't continue in the future.
"It's hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists' music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better."
Love has vehemently denied that she sanctioned the use of her former husband's image and has taken to her Twitter account, posting over 200 angry tweets in a six-hour period. Everett True's accusation that the blame should be laid squarely at the feet of Love and Grohl prompted a particularly vicious response. You know, one part of me feels all sympathetic to Cobain's legacy, and agrees with Novoselic and Grohl that Cobain's image shouldn't be tarnished or belittled in any way. But then the angry part of me kicks in and doesn't give a f#&k, because Cobain (supposedly) offed himself. If he really cared about his image and legacy, would he have taken that final, unalterable step? That part of me doubts that Cobain would care so deeply about some silly little video game character. I think this can all be summed up by one word: ambivalence. True fans will be torn like I am, and everyone else simply won't give a f$#k.
